Vertical blinds are a popular choice for sliding doors and wide windows, practical, easy to use, and great at managing light. But because the slats hang long and low, they’re prone to dust buildup and moisture issues, especially near entryways or in humid spots.

Here’s how to keep them looking fresh and mould-free.

1. Dust Regularly to Prevent Build-Up

  • Close the blinds fully, then use a microfiber cloth, soft brush, or vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to dust each slat from top to bottom.
  • Rotate the blinds and repeat on the other side.

  • Pay attention to the base of each slat. This is where pet hair, dirt and debris tend to settle.

Tip: For fabric slats, avoid brushing too hard so you don’t fray the edges.

2. Spot Clean Gently

  • For marks or light stains, use a damp cloth and mild detergent.
  • Gently blot the affected area, don’t rub, especially on fabric slats, as this can distort the weave.

  • Avoid soaking the fabric. Instead, dry the area immediately with a clean towel.

PVC or vinyl slats? These can handle a bit more moisture. You can wipe them down with warm, soapy water and dry thoroughly to avoid streaks.

3. Prevent Mould in Damp or High-Traffic Areas

Sliding doors often bring in outdoor moisture, combine that with warm air and you’ve got mould-friendly conditions.

  • Keep the area ventilated: open windows, run exhaust fans, or use a dehumidifier in particularly humid seasons.
  • Wipe down condensation on glass doors regularly so it doesn’t transfer to the blinds.
  • Check for early signs of mould, small black or grey spots, and spot treat with a vinegar-water solution (test on a hidden spot first).

If mould persists, it may be time to replace the slats.

4. How Often Should You Clean Vertical Blinds?

A quick dust every 2 - 4 weeks helps keep grime at bay. In kitchens, bathrooms or areas with lots of foot traffic (like patio doors), aim for a deeper clean every few months.
