Venetian blinds are a stylish, functional choice for managing light and privacy, but they do collect dust faster than other styles. The good news? With the right approach, they’re easy to clean and maintain. Here’s how to care for different types of Venetian blinds found in Aussie homes.

1. Timber Venetian Blinds

Natural timber adds warmth and character, but it needs gentle care to avoid damage.

  • Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth or a microfiber duster. Work slat by slat, or close the blind and wipe one side, then the other.

  • Never use water or cleaning sprays, as moisture can warp or stain real wood.

  • If needed, use a timber-specific furniture polish, applied sparingly to a cloth, not directly onto the blinds.

2. Faux-Wood & PVC Blinds

These are designed to mimic timber but are much more durable, especially in kitchens, bathrooms, or homes with pets and kids.

  • Dust weekly with a microfiber cloth or vacuum brush.

  • For a deeper clean, wipe slats with a damp cloth and mild detergent.

  • PVC slats can handle more moisture, so you can remove stubborn grime with a non-abrasive sponge if needed. Just dry thoroughly to avoid streaks.

3. Aluminium Venetian Blinds

Lightweight and moisture-resistant, aluminium blinds are popular in high-traffic and high-humidity areas.

  • Use a microfiber cloth, glove, or soft brush to dust both sides of the slats.

  • For sticky buildup (like near kitchen stoves), use a damp cloth with mild dish soap.

  • Avoid pressing too hard, aluminium slats can bend if handled roughly.

4. Cleaning Tips That Work Across The Board

  • Always tilt the slats fully open before cleaning. This makes it easier to reach both sides.

  • Work top to bottom so dust falls onto already-dirty slats, not ones you’ve just cleaned.

  • For a fast clean between deep cleans, try a Venetian blind duster tool that covers multiple slats at once.

How Often Should You Clean Your Venetian Blinds?

It depends on the room and how much dust or moisture is in the air. As a general guide, give your venetian blinds a light dust every 1-2 weeks to stop dirt building up between the slats. A more thorough clean, wiping each slat with a damp cloth, can be done every few months, or more often in high-traffic areas like kitchens or bathrooms.

If you have timber Venetians, stick to dry dusting more regularly to avoid the need for deeper cleans that could damage the wood. For aluminium or faux-wood blinds, a quick monthly wipe-down is usually enough to keep them looking sharp.
