Blinds are one of the most practical window furnishings around, stylish, functional, and easy to care for. But to keep them looking their best, it helps to know the right way to clean each type.

Here’s a simple, no-fuss guide to cleaning the most common blinds found in Australian homes.

Roller blinds

Roller blinds are made from durable, low-maintenance fabrics like polyester, PVC, or sunscreen mesh. Because they roll up and down, dust and marks can go unnoticed until they build up. In high-use areas like kitchens or bathrooms, they can also attract grease or moisture, especially near windows and cooking zones.

Basic care:

  • Dust with a microfiber cloth or vacuum brush every few weeks.
  • Spot clean with a damp sponge and mild detergent, gently blot, don’t rub.

  • Always let the blind dry fully before rolling it back up.

For dual roller blinds:

  • Clean each fabric layer separately, sunscreen first, then blockout.
  • Use a soft touch on mesh-style fabrics to avoid damaging the weave.

Tip: In kitchens or bathrooms, aim for a monthly wipe-down to stay ahead of grease or moisture build-up.

Vertical Blinds

Vertical blinds are a popular choice for sliding doors and wide windows, practical, easy to use, and great at managing light. But because the slats hang long and low, they’re prone to dust buildup and moisture issues, especially near entryways or in humid spots. They can also brush against the floor, which brings in extra dirt or pet hair.

Fabric slats:

  • Dust gently with a microfiber cloth or vacuum brush.
  • Spot clean with a damp cloth, don’t soak or scrub.

  • Let any damp areas dry fully before closing the blinds.

PVC or vinyl slats:

  • Wipe down with warm, soapy water and dry with a clean towel.

Tip: In humid areas, keep the space well-ventilated and check for mould around the base of the slats.

Venetian Blinds

Venetian blinds have horizontal slats that are excellent for light control, but that also means they collect dust quickly, especially along the top edge of each slat. In humid or steamy areas, moisture can settle between slats or cause build-up near the cords and brackets. Regular cleaning keeps them looking sharp and functioning smoothly.

Timber blinds:

  • Dry dust only, never use water or sprays.
  • Use a soft cloth or furniture polish (applied to the cloth, not the slat).

Faux-wood & PVC:

  • Dust regularly and wipe with a damp cloth for deeper cleans.
  • These are great for humid areas, just dry thoroughly after cleaning.

Aluminium:

  • Use a soft cloth or glove to dust.
  • For sticky spots, use mild detergent and gentle pressure, don’t bend the slats.

Tip: Always tilt slats open before cleaning both sides, and work from top to bottom.

Final Tips

When it comes to cleaning blinds, a little regular upkeep goes a long way. Light dusting every few weeks helps prevent build-up and makes deeper cleans much easier down the track. Whether your blinds are made from fabric, timber, PVC or aluminium, gentle methods are always best, harsh scrubbing or soaking can do more harm than good.

If you're ever unsure about a cleaner or method, always test it on a hidden section first. And don’t forget the small parts, chains, cords and brackets can collect just as much dust as the slats themselves. Keeping your blinds clean not only helps them look great, but also extends their life, especially in high-use areas like sliding doors or kitchens.
